Hello! As a default, we get a lot of exposure, and being placed in our subreddits list in our sidebar can earn a subreddit a lot of traffic!However, we get very, very little space for our sidebar. A bit above 5000 characters (And formatting things like tables eat up a lot of it).Because of this, before today, we only allowed subreddits with above 10000 subscribers to be placed on our sidebar, so space wasn't wasted.However, this really punished new and upcoming subreddits, which need all the help they can get to succeed.We want to help people discover subreddits. /r/pics is a very broad topic, and we want people to find subreddits that may be a bit more tailored to them. Sometimes, these places can be found in the small communities.The solutionTo remedy this, we have done a few things.We cleaned out the crap in the sidebar.There were a lot of inactive subreddits in the list. We removed those and freed up some space. In addition, we plan to be more on top of the list as time goes onWe have created a new section for randomly chosen topicsThese topics are chosen by us, but can be nominated by the community! You can nominate topics here. Once we have a topic, we find some good relevant subreddits, and list them in the sidebar until we decide to change the topics. The subreddits do not need to meet any subscriber number to be featuredWe have created a rising subreddits section.These are subreddits that have under 10000 subscribers, but over 1000 subscribers. They are active, newer, and growing. Subreddits can be put here by applying for a spot by the subreddit moderators in this thread. Subreddits put here get their spot for one month before being switched out. After that time, they cannot be in the list again for a month, but after that cooldown period, they can reapply for a spot.I think this system is a bit more fair to smaller subreddits, and can help everyone find some cool new subreddits.If you have any questions, please ask below.Merry Christmas.
